Deputy Attorney General 을 시작으로 부지사를 거쳐 1989 년부터 지금까지 연방하원의원으로 활동하고 있는 10 선의 민주당 중진의원입니다.
Faleomavaega 의원은 현재 외교안보분과 소속으로 아시아 태평양 환경분과
소위원회(Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and the Global Environment)의 위원장을 맡고 있습니다. 아태환경소위원회는 남북한, 중국, 일본, 오스트리아, 대만을 비롯하여 총 33 개국의 대외 정책을 책임지고 담당하는 곳입니다.

10 년 동안 일본측의 로비에 막혀 아태환경소위원회를 단 한차례도 통과하지 못해왔던 “일본군 위안부 사죄 결의안(HR121)“을 위해 역사상 처음으로 피해자 3 명을 초청하여 청문회를 개최한 의원입니다. 이것을 계기로 연방하원은 이 결의안을 만장일치로 통과시켰습니다.
얼마 전 미국지명위원회의 독도 명칭 변경 소동때도 Faleomavaega 의원은 공화당과 민주당의 고른 서명을 받아 BGN 의 명칭변경으로 인한 한미동맹약화에 대한 우려와 원상 복귀를 요구하는 서한을 아태환경소위원회 위원장의 자격으로 부시 대통령에게 기민하게 전달하여 지명위원회의 결정을 원상 복귀하도록 하는데 결정적인 역할을 해주었습니다. 이 모든 것이 지난 해 HR121 을 이루어 가는 과정에서 한인커뮤니티와 교감해왔던 일의 결과입니다. 한인들을 위해 2 만개의 전문직 취업비자 쿼터를
지정하는 법안을 입안했고, 한미 비자 면제에 대해서도 오랜 지지자이며 한미 FTA 체결도 찬성하는 입장입니다.
Faleomavaega 의원의 이번 한인타운 방문은 HR121 로 시작된 한인커뮤니티와의 연대를 더욱 공고히 할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이며 이것을 바탕으로 아시아태평양 지역과 관련된 미국의 외교정책을 결정하는데 있어서 한인커뮤니티의 목소리가 전달 될수 있는 소중한 통로를 확보하는 일이 될 것 입니다.
